HL-Powertrain project

HL-POWERTRAIN is a collaborative project funded by the European Union through the Operational Programme of the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) of the Valencia Region 2014-2020. This project, led by the Valencian Agency of Innovation (AVI), focuses on the technological and innovative development of the propulsion system for hyperloop using a turbojet engine and an electric vehicle powertrain.

Objetives

  • Implement a functional prototype of the hyperloop propulsion system using a turbojet engine and an electric vehicle powertrain.
  • Create a digital twin of the hyperloop propulsion system for validation.
  • Apply the project results in the field of high-power electric mobility.

The project

HL-POWERTRAIN is part of the technological and industrial development led by Zeleros, a company dedicated to hyperloop development. In collaboration with private partners such as Hybrid Energy Storage Solutions and Ziur Composites, as well as the Technological Institute of Energy (ITE) and the Center for Thermal Engines at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the project aims to conduct research, technological developments, and integrations to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Structural design, modeling, and characterization of the turbojet engine.
  • Development of the electrical system, including the Battery Pack, EMS (Energy Management System), and BMS (Battery Management System).
  • Mechanical, electrical, and electronic integration of the Powertrain system.
  • Creation of a digital twin of the hyperloop propulsion system.
  • Development and implementation of a prototype grid integration system and fast charging technology study.
  • Study of hybrid storage systems.

Specifically, HESStec leads the development and implementation of the grid integration system prototype, the study of fast charging technology, and the study of hybrid storage systems.

The main outcome of the project is an Energy Management System (EMS) responsible for energy management and grid integration of the storage system, primarily batteries, for both charging and discharging processes, using suitable power electronics for this purpose.
